Soil Nitrogen Characteristics on Farmland and Woodland in the Northeast Sandy Area of Ulanbuh Desert
Abstract:This study investigated the effects of changes in land-use type on soil Nitrogen content in Ulanbuh desert. Four land-use types include forest, Shrub land, farmland, abandoned land. Results show that the effects of changes in land-use type on soil is significant. (1) Land alkali-hydro nitrogen content is the highest, but total nitrogen and organic matter content of forest is the lowest; Soil organic matter of Farmland is the highest, and content of total nitrogen and alkali-hydro nitrogen content of land is good; a Bush was the highest content of total nitrogen, and organic matter and alkali-hydro nitrogen content is not the worst forest, Controls the wasteland nitrogen content and the content of soil organic is higher than the trees. (2) Trees overall alkali-hydro nitrogen levels above the shrubs, but total nitrogen and organic content instead. So suggest that conditional irrigation, planting the arbor can quickly improve soil quality and protection of farmland; in drought sandy area, sandy shrubs of nitrogen fixation with the potential for enhancing soil quality and improving eco-environment should be extended widely.(3) In the 0-40cm in soil, the nitrogen content is different between the woodland.
Populus simonii ¡Á(Populus pyramidalis + Salix matsudana) cv. Poplaristrees organic matter, total nitrogen, alkali-hydro nitrogen content is the highest. The nitrogen content of shrub land is higher than the farmland.

The organic matter content of forest in the surface apparent is mostly higher than in the sub layer. It indicate that forest have an obvious mend effect in surface.

Land-use effects on organic matter and physical properties of
soil in a southern Mediterranean highland of Turkey

Abstract
Forest
and grassland soils in highlands of southern Mediterranean Turkey are being seriously degraded and destructed due to extensive agricultural activities. This study investigated the effects of changes in land-use type on some soil properties in a Mediterranean plateau. Three adjacent land-use types included the cultivated lands, which have been converted from pastures for 12 years, fragmented forests, and unaltered pastures lands. Disturbed and undisturbed soil samples were collected from four sites at each of the three different land-use types from depths of 0 10 cm and 10 20 cm in Typic Haploxeroll soils with an elevation of about 1400 m. When the pasture was converted into cultivation, soil organic matter (SOM) pool of cultivated lands for a depth of 0 20 cm were significantly reduced by, on average 49% relative to SOM content of the pasture lands. There was no significant difference in SOM between the depths in each land-use type, and SOM values of the forest and pasture lands were almost similar. There was also a significant change in soil bulk density (BD) among cultivation (1.33 Mg m3), pasture (1.19 Mg m3), and forest (1.25 Mg m3) soils at depth of 0 20 cm. Only for the pasture, BD of the depth of 0 10 cm was significantly different from that of 10 20 cm. Depending upon the increases in BD and disruption of pores by cultivation, total porosity decreased accordingly. Cultivation of the unaltered pasture obviously increased the soil erodibility measured by USLE-K factor for each soil depth, and USLE-K factor was approximately two times greater in the cultivated land than in the pasture indicating the vulnerability of the cultivated land to water erosion. The mean weight diameter (MWD) and water-stable aggregation (WSA) were greater in the pasture and forest soils compared to the cultivated soils, and didn¡¯t change with the depth for each land-use type. Aggregates of >4.0 mm size were dominant in the pasture and forest soils, whereas the cultivated soils comprised aggregates of the size[1]0.5 mm. I found that samples collected from cultivated land gave the lowest saturated hydraulic conductivity values regardless of soil depths, whereas the highest values were measured on samples from forest soils. In conclusion, the results showed that the cultivation of the pastures degraded the soil physical properties, leaving soils more susceptible to the erosion. This suggests that land disturbances should be strictly avoided in the pastures with the limited soil depth in the southern Mediterranean highlands.

1. Introduction
Conversion of forest and grassland into agricultural land is of considerable concern worldwide in the context of environmental degradation and global climate change (Wali et al., 1999; Mahtab and Karim, 1992). Ecologically incompatible human land-use and management practices implemented locally such as deforest tion, and soil fertility depletion have led cumulatively to an alteration in the global biogeochemical cycles. Between 1938 and 1991 in Turkey, pasture area decreased by approximately 47% from 41 to 21.8 million hectare (Mha), while arable crop land increased by about 80% from 13.3 to 24 Mha (SIS, 2002). Clearance of forests for agricultural production and grazing is widespread, in particular, in highlands of Turkey. Additionally, semi-arid climate and inclined topography prevailing in the Mediterranean plateaus of Turkey render ecosystems vulnerable and unable to recover from incompatible changes in land-se type.
Upon conversion of the land to arable agriculture, loss of soil organic matter (SOM) occurs, and Elliott (1986) and Grupta and Germida (1988) reported that cultivation of pasture soils has resulted in 25 50% decrease in soil organic carbon. Furthermore, despite its variation as a function of abiotic and biotic factors, organic carbon losses in former grassland and forest soils by conventional tillage practices are estimated to range from 20 to 50% of the initial content in the zone of cultivation within the first 40 50 years of cultivation (Bruce et al., 1999). These losses show a rapid exponential decline over the first 20 years after which soil organic carbon levels gradually stabilize at a new steady state over about the next 30 years.
Loss of soil organic carbon with cultivation is connected to the destruction of macroaggregates (Tisdall and Oades, 1982; Elliott, 1986). Pore size distribution and connectivity together with bulk density, aggregation and aggregate stability is important soil physical property that can be to a great extent influenced by the land degradation due to the cultivation. Because of its effect on porosity, soil aggregate stability is significant, and its influence on other soil physical properties is generally high, especially pertaining to bulk density and hydraulic conductivity. (Cerda, 1996). Soil erodibility is also directly linked to the quality of the aggregation in the soil surface. Soil aggregation usually implies the presence of large and linked macropores and largely controls movement of water, particularly near the soil surface, where crust formation and compaction can seal the surface (Morin et al., 1989; Cerda, 1996). The conversion of forest and pastureland into cropland is known to deteriorate soil properties, especially reduce SOM and change the distribution and stability of soil aggregates (Ross, 1993; Singh and Singh, 1996). Soils become more susceptible to erosion since macroaggregates are disrupted (Elliott, 1986; Cambardella and Elliott, 1993; Six et al;2000).
Overgrazing, deforestation, and increase in the agricultural activity have intensified pressures on high-altitude fragile ecosystems. Ecosystems of Turkey with the elevation of 1500 m and higher, and the slope range of 15 40% account for about 26 and 34% of the total land area of 759,978 km2, respectively (Atalay, 1997). High altitude arable agriculture and overgrazing put ecological sustainability of the land resources at risk in southern Mediterranean plateaus of Turkey. Therefore, it is thought that assessment of organic matter and physical properties of soil upon conversion of natural pastures for agriculture is very significance to distinguish early variations in soil quality. The objective of this study was to quantify effects of changes in land-use type on organic matter and physical properties of soil in a Mediterranean highland region of Turkey.
4. Conclusions
The degradation of the highland soils with the restricted depth by the cultivation seriously impaired soil properties and resulted in significant decreases in the soil organic matter, aggregate stability, mean weight diameter and the hydraulic conductivity. Decreases of organic matter up to 49% in such short time of clearance as 12 years and its crucial effects on soil physical properties well explained the vulnerability of the structure and function of the highaltitude ecosystems. Determination of USLE-K factor further showed that the cultivated soils were more susceptible to the water erosion than the forest and pasture soils. The erodibility of the pasture-cleared cultivated land was 2.4 and 2.0 times greater than those of the forest and pasture, respectively. In conclusion, when these systems are converted for agriculture without the use of proper practices of securing organic matter and soil stability, they are easily threatened. Therefore, the measures should be implemented urgently to sustain high-altitude ecosystems and reinstate the degraded lands in the southern Mediterranean region of Turkey.
